1. Fluoride A major area of concern we have is our friend
the cavity. We have begun to see deep decay or cavities not only in
our young people's teeth but also in adults especially under old
silver fillings and between teeth. There are several easy ways to
reduce your risk of getting a cavity. Brushing and flossing are by
far the best way to prevent cavities. Adding a high strength
Fluoride rinse or gel dramatically decrease cavities when using in
conjunction with brushing and flossing.
Did you know that Coca ~ Cola is made with Phosphoric Acid and 14
spoon full of sugar? A Pepsi is made with Citric Acid and 15.5 spoon
full of sugar?
These acids are powerful substances that will damage your teeth.
The bacteria in our mouth live off the sugars we eat and drink.
These bacteria create cavities in our teeth and damage our gum
tissues creating Gingivitis, gum disease (Periodontitis), bone loss
and eventual tooth loss, not to mention bad breath and halitosis.
As you may have heard, the best way to prevent these things from
happening is to brush and floss, use a Fluoride rinse and have
regular professional cleanings and examinations from both the
hygienist and the doctor using both radiographic (X-Rays)
evaluation, laser detection and physical observation.
We recommend for both adults and children our in-office Fluoride
treatment coupled with our home Fluoride program. This treatment has
no side effects unless ingested in large quantities over long
periods of time. Fluoride toxicity or Fluorosis, which is the
thickening and browning of the tooth enamel, is produced only during
periods of tooth development and by systemic fluoride use ~ drinking
water containing extremely high Fluoride concentration and tablets.
Fluoride works several different ways to strengthen our teeth.
The Fluoride will treat the teeth by reducing the solubility of the
tooth enamel. That means the Fluoride ion will make the enamel
stronger and more resistant to the acids and bacteria we have and
place in our mouth. The Fluoride interferes with the bacteria in our
mouth. That means Fluoride will reduce or control the bacteria in
our mouth and, it will slow down the accumulation of plaque and
tartar in our mouth. Fluoride has been shown to "reverse the decay
process" ~ or stop cavities and even help the tooth rebuild itself.
Fluoride is a great adjunct in helping prevent cavities, gum disease
and tooth loss.
